Inspired by the great outdoors for a long time - in particular the mountains and the depths of the oceans – he joins Jean-Louis Etienne for a 2 years mission after graduating from his engineer school in Switzerland.
Passionated about scuba diving, driven by a strong curiosity and sensitive to the threat of global warming and the impact of man on the planet, he creates UNDER THE POLE in 2008.
For more than 14 years, he leads major underwater exploration missions: UNDER THE POLE I, to document the underwater world in the heart of the Arctic Ice Ocean; UNDER THE POLE II, for which he acquired the WHY, for an exploration of the West coast of Greenland and a wintering in the ice; and finally, the first part of UNDER THE POLE III in 2017 with the crossing of the Northwest Passage and its research program on natural fluorescence.
The second part of UNDER THE POLE III is highlighted by the arrival in a “hot” climate in French Polynesia and two significant missions: the “DeepHope” program between 2018 and 2020, studying crepuscular corals in collaboration with CNRS and CRIOBE; the “Capsule” mission in 2019, to observe reef life in continuous immersion from an underwater habitat specially developed by UNDER THE POLE.
UNDER THE POLE took on its full meaning during DeepHope and Capsule missions, and lays the foundations for UNDER THE POLE IV • DEEPLIFE • 2021-2030, which will be dedicated to the 2021-2030 United Nations decade for ocean sciences for sustainable development and the exploration of the mesophotic area (30-200m).
